Florida enforces stricter firearm purchase rules than many Southern states. Buyers must be 21 to purchase any firearm from a dealer, with exceptions for law enforcement and military members buying rifles or shotguns at 18. A three-day waiting period applies, excluding weekends and holidays, or until the background check clears, whichever is later. Counties can extend this to five days. Florida concealed weapon license holders are exempt, as are rifle and shotgun buyers with a hunter safety certificate or hunting license. Florida allows concealed carry without a license for eligible individuals since July 1, 2023, requiring identification to be presented on demand. Following a First District Court of Appeal decision in September 2025 and guidance from the Attorney General, open carry is also lawful statewide, subject to prohibited locations and rules against threatening displays. The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services issues optional concealed weapon or firearm licenses, and after a 2026 appellate ruling, it now issues them to qualified applicants aged 18 and older.
Florida has four deer zones with staggered seasons. General gun season runs from November 7 to January 24 in Zone C, which includes Duval and most of Hillsborough, and from November 26 to 29 plus December 12 to February 21 in Zone D in the western Panhandle. Zone B, covering eastern Hillsborough, operates from December 5 to February 21. Rimfire rifles are illegal for deer, centerfire semi-automatic rifles are restricted to five-round magazines, and full metal jacket ammunition is prohibited. Feral hogs can be hunted year-round on private land with permission.
Orange County spans Zone B and Zone C along S.R. 50 and U.S. 441, so consult the FWC zone map for your hunt. Tosohatchee WMA on the east side of the county is known for deer and hogs.
