Let’s talk about the SIG SAUER P226-XFIVE LEGION. This isn’t a gun you see every day at the Wichita range or in a standard concealed carry rotation. It’s a purpose-built competition pistol that borrows heavily from SIG’s elite X-Series line, wrapped in the LEGION treatment. At our shop, this has become one of our steady sellers in the high-end competition category, and for good reason. The build quality immediately stands out, matching or exceeding what you’d expect at this price point from SIG. Our customers who compete in USPSA or Steel Challenge report it’s a flat-shooting, incredibly accurate platform right from the case.

Stand-Out Features
The XFIVE LEGION is defined by its competition DNA. The 5-inch bull barrel and full-length steel frame provide a significant forward weight bias. We’ve found this makes for a remarkably stable sight picture and reduces muzzle flip dramatically compared to a standard P226. The trigger is the star of the show—a short-reset, single-action pull that, in our testing, consistently broke right around 2.2 pounds. It’s clean, predictable, and built for speed.
The XSeries grip module is another highlight. It’s aggressively textured without being abrasive, and the interchangeable backstraps let you tailor the grip circumference. Our staff observation was that the slide-to-frame fit is exceptional. We tried it on several frames, and the drop-in fit was perfect every time with no fitting required—a testament to SIG’s machining tolerances on this line.
Finally, you get the full LEGION package: the case, the challenge coin, and access to the LEGION gear store. It’s a complete, premium offering.
Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Pros:
- Superb Out-of-the-Box Trigger: The short-reset, light single-action pull is competition-ready from day one. It’s a major reason for the model’s 4.7/5 customer satisfaction rating across our buyers.
- Exceptional Accuracy & Stability: The bull barrel and heavy frame make this one of the flattest-shooting 9mm pistols we’ve handled. It’s easy to shoot tight groups, even at 25 yards.
- Premium Build & Fit: The machining and finish are top-tier. The slide runs like it’s on bearings, and the fitment, as noted, requires zero gunsmithing.
- Complete Package: Three 20-round magazines are included, which is a real value add for competitors who would be buying extras anyway.
- Reliable Performer: In all our testing and from customer reports, it feeds and fires a wide variety of 9mm ammunition without issue—a must for a competition gun.
❌ Cons:
- Weight & Size: At 6.2 oz measured on our scale, it’s a heavy, full-size pistol. This is a strength for competition but makes it impractical for concealed carry under Kansas laws for most people.
- Price Point: It’s a significant investment. You’re paying for LEGION-level finish and competition-specific features.
- DA/SA Learning Curve: For shooters used to striker-fired or 1911-style single-action-only pistols, mastering the double-action first shot and transition to single-action takes practice.
Best For
Buy if: You’re a USPSA, Steel Challenge, or IDPA competitor (in appropriate divisions) looking for a premium, out-of-the-box-ready pistol. It’s also an excellent choice for a dedicated range gun where ultimate accuracy and shootability are the goals. Law enforcement officers seeking a highly accurate duty or qualification pistol may also appreciate its performance.
Skip if: You’re looking for a concealed carry or home defense pistol. Its size, weight, and competition-focused sights (non-night sights) make it less ideal for those roles compared to more compact, defense-oriented models. Also, if you’re on a tight budget, there are excellent competition pistols at lower price points.
Your Questions Answered
Is the P226-XFIVE LEGION good for USPSA?
Yes, it’s an excellent choice, primarily for the Limited or Limited Optics divisions (if you add an optic plate). Its weight, trigger, and inherent accuracy give you a real competitive edge. Several of our customers who compete in Kansas and Missouri matches use this model.
Can you carry the P226-XFIVE LEGION concealed?
Practically, no. It’s a large, heavy, competition-focused pistol. While Kansas law allows it with a permit, its 5-inch barrel, full-size frame, and weight over 6 ounces make concealment very challenging compared to dedicated carry models.
What ammo does it run best with?
In our testing, it has run flawlessly with everything from 115gr FMJ range ammo to 147gr subsonic loads. For competition, most shooters prefer 124gr or 147gr rounds for a softer feel. Its robust design isn’t picky.
Is the trigger adjustable?
It is not user-adjustable for weight. The trigger is set at the factory with a very light, short-reset single-action pull optimized for competition. The overtravel stop is adjustable, which is a nice touch for fine-tuning.
How does it compare to a standard P226 Legion?
The XFIVE is a different animal. It has a longer 5″ bull barrel, a heavier steel frame, target sights, a competition-specific XSeries grip, and a lighter trigger. The standard P226 Legion is more of an all-purpose duty/combat pistol.
Where can I buy P226-XFIVE online?
You can purchase the P226-XFIVE LEGION right here at Polymer80Warehouse. We stock it in our Cape Girardeau warehouse and handle the FFL transfer process smoothly. It’s one of our better-reviewed products in this category for its consistent quality.
What’s the real-world reliability?
Based on our sales and customer feedback, reliability is a key strength. With a 4.7/5 satisfaction score across our buyers, malfunctions are rarely, if ever, reported. It’s built to the high standards of the SIG LEGION series.
