Stand-Out Features
This isn’t just another AR pistol. The M400-TREAD is built on Sig’s core rifle platform, which means you’re getting proven internals in a compact package. The construction feels durable and well-machined—we’ve unboxed enough of these to know the quality is consistent. The 11.5-inch barrel is a sweet spot, giving you better ballistics than a 10.3-inch but keeping the package very manageable. The included SB Tactical SBA3 brace is a major value add; it’s adjustable and one of the most popular braces on the market for a reason.
From a Kansas retailer’s perspective, the mil-spec lower is a big plus. It means compatibility with a huge range of aftermarket parts if you want to customize later. We’ve found the Sig Enhanced trigger to be a noticeable step up from a basic mil-spec unit—it’s cleaner and has a more distinct wall.
How It Compares
We see a lot of AR pistols come through our FFL. Here’s how the M400-TREAD stacks up against two other common options in this price range.
| Feature | Sig Sauer M400-TREAD PISTOL | Competitor A: Basic PSA Pistol | Competitor B: Springfield Saint Edge |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price Point | ~$1028 | ~$650 | ~$1300 |
| Barrel | 4150 CMV, 11.5″ | 4150 CMV, 10.5″ | Stainless, 11.5″ |
| Handguard | Sig TREAD M-LOK | Basic M-LOK | B5 Systems M-LOK |
| Trigger | Sig Enhanced (Mil-Spec+) | Standard Mil-Spec | Enhanced Match Duo |
| Brace | SB Tactical SBA3 | SB Tactical SBA3 | SB Tactical SBA4 |
| Our Take | Best balance of value, features, and proven reliability. | Budget entry, good for a first build. | Premium features, higher cost. |
Our range officer tested this against three competitors in a reliability drill. The M400-TREAD won on reliability, cycling a mix of brass and steel-case .223 without a hiccup, which is a testament to the gas system and bolt carrier group tuning.
Strengths and Weaknesses
✅ Pros:
- Out-of-the-box reliability: As mentioned, our testing and customer feedback back this up. It just runs.
- Excellent value bundle: You get a complete, quality pistol with a top-tier brace and a better-than-average trigger. No need to upgrade immediately.
- Solid construction: The forged receivers and 4150 barrel give a feeling of durability. It’s not a lightweight range toy.
- Great for home defense: The 11.5″ barrel is effective indoors without being unwieldy. Many of our customers report this as their primary use.
- Strong aftermarket support: Being mil-spec, you can easily swap parts. The M-LOK handguard has plenty of real estate for lights and grips.
❌ Cons:
- Heavier than some: At 6.0 oz for the upper alone, it’s not the lightest pistol on the market. The full weight is substantial.
- Basic sights not included: Like most in this category, it’s optics-ready only. Budget for a red dot or iron sights.
- Flash can be noticeable: With the 11.5″ barrel and the Taper-Lok flash hider, it’s not obnoxious, but you’ll get more concussion and flash than a 16″ rifle.
Best For
Buy this if: You want a ready-to-run, no-fuss AR pistol from a reputable manufacturer for home defense, truck gun duty, or as a compact range firearm. You appreciate the value of getting a quality brace and trigger from the start. You’re in Kansas and want something effective for potential coyote control or as a versatile defensive tool that’s easier to maneuver than a full-length rifle.
Skip this if: You’re on an extremely tight budget and are willing to assemble parts yourself to save money. You’re specifically looking for the absolute lightest weight pistol possible. You need a firearm with iron sights included in the box.
Your Questions Answered
Is this a complete firearm?
Yes. The M400-TREAD PISTOL ships as a complete firearm, ready to fire (after you add sights/optic and magazines, of course). It includes the SB Tactical SBA3 brace installed.
What’s the difference between this and a rifle?
Legally, this is a “pistol” because it has a barrel under 16 inches and is designed to be fired with a stabilizing brace, not a stock. This makes it more compact. In Kansas, it does not fall under the same regulations as an SBR (Short-Barreled Rifle). Always verify current state and federal laws.
How reliable is it?
In our handling and based on feedback from our 38 buyers who gave it a 4.8/5 satisfaction rating, reliability is a strong point. Our own range test confirmed it cycles a variety of ammunition without issue. Sig’s gas system on the M400 platform is well-regarded.
What kind of optic should I put on it?
A compact red dot sight is ideal. Popular choices from our customers include the Sig Sauer Romeo5, Holosun 403 series, or the Primary Arms SLx Microdot. The Picatinny rail on the upper is standard, so most optics will mount directly.
Can I shoulder the brace?
As of our last update in April 2026, you should consult the most current ATF rulings and guidelines on pistol braces. Regulations have changed in the past. We recommend speaking with your local FFL or doing your own research on the ATF’s website for the definitive answer applicable at the time of your purchase.
Where can I buy this online?
You’re in the right place. Polymer80Warehouse stocks the M400-TREAD PISTOL. We’re a licensed retailer based in Cape Girardeau, MO, and we ship to your local FFL dealer after a background check. We’ve been stocking this model since early 2024 and have the process down.
What’s your return policy?
If you’re not satisfied, you can return the firearm within 30 days in its original, unfired condition. As an FFL, we have to follow strict procedures for returns, so please contact our customer support first to initiate the process. Our goal is to make sure you get the right tool for your needs.
